Making Sense of Website Jargon
Domain Name: Domain names [e.g. www.yourplace.co.uk] work on the same principle as regular street addresses - a domain name is a location that a computer is asked to find when it is typed into the address bar. Website information is stored at the address.
Email Account: An electronic mailbox where your e-mail is sent from, or received and stored. Most people without a domain name or website of their own have an e-mail account 'at' the same company that provides their internet access. Some people use a provider like Hotmail or Yahoo, in addition to the account provided for them with their internet access.
Server: A big computer that can look after and power many websites.
Website Hosting: Hosting means the computer space in which your website is stored. With Milford, your website would be hosted using our dedicated server - meaning that 'down-time' is virtually non-existent. Our dedicated server communicates with other computers on the internet, and will send your website information to the computer that requests it, so the website appears on the reader's computer screen.
Down Time: A period of time in which your website does not work or is not visible on the internet.
Search Engine: Search engines are the means by which people search the internet. Search engines collect information from the World Wide Web of pages and index [sort and order in priority] pages according to their content. Milford know how to gain exposure in several different search engines to ensure that your website will be found.
Search Engine Optimisation [SEO]: Search Engine Optimisation is a process designed to maximise the potential of a website to be found by a search engine. Websites can be 'optimised' by adapting the content, structure and code of the pages to suit search engines. We offer this service as part of all packages.
Website Statistics: Statistics that provide information about the progress that your website is making. So that you can be reassured that your website is being visited by significant numbers of potential customers, we provide an internet address that you can visit to see your statistics for yourself.
A Browser: A browser is a piece of computer software that translates HTML code into a coherent website page on the reader's computer. Examples of browsers include Internet Explorer [IE], Opera, Mozilla Firefox [Firefox], Safari, and Netscape Navigator.
